Garden Roofing Systems
Garden roofing systems are the most popular type of green roofing option. In their basic form, these systems are simply collections of vegetation, soil and drainage components installed on the roofing surface. The benefit from these systems is 3-fold. First, the covered areas of the roof provide for additional insulation, reducing heating and cooling costs. Second, vegetation consumes ambient carbon dioxide generating oxygen directly improving the environment. Finally, garden roofing systems are designed to be aesthetically pleasing. These types of systems have come a long way since their original designs as they are available today in modular form making both installation and maintenance a lot more straightforward and simple.
Photovoltaics
Photovoltaics, or solar cells are becoming ever-popular in the commercial roofing industry. Photovoltaics take advantage of unused roofing space and usual direct line of site to the sun to create power from solar energy that is used to power the building and reduce dependence on energy from conventional sources. Depending on the breadth of panels installed, the return on investment for photovoltaics is short-term and in some cases, credits are given to the building owner from the power company because surplus energy from the panels is being returned to the power grid.
Reflective Roofing Systems (Cool Roof Systems)
Most people are familiar with the concept that black materials absorb heat while white materials reflect heat. This concept also applies to roofing systems. Highly reflective, white roofing systems such as TPO and PVC reflect heat away from the roofing surface compared to a black roofing systems such as conventional B.U.R. systems or black EPDM. There have been examples of white roofing systems being 80 degrees cooler than their black counterparts during the same time of the year. This converts into a 10 to 20 degree difference in internal building temperature resulting in thousands of dollars per year in energy savings.
Insulation Optimization
A majority of roofing installations are done using the minimum insulation thickness required per code. Depending on the geography, this level of insulation may not be optimal. Using the latest industry calculators, Jottan-Jorel, Inc. can estimate the optimal insulation thickness as to minimize heat loss in the building while not adding extra, unneeded insulation.
